Are you sure it's the tach? It's driven from the training coil.

Cheaper to find a used one. I have one. $20 + shipping and it's yours. PM me if interested.

Thanks for the reply.
I don’t want to get the wrong part as I’m getting all kinds of mixed info. I bought a cable from Australia and the mechanic said it’s the wrong part, and that the tach is digital. On this site people say it could be a coil or something else. So, I’m not sure how to proceed.

No RX-7 tach is ran from a cable. They are all electric with electronics that drive a mechanical pointer. It gets the signal from the trailing coil. Are you sure the noise is from the tach and not the speedometer? The speedometer does use a cable that is connected to the transmission. One easy way to test would be to remove the cable from the transmission and see if the noise goes away.

Thanks for your great response, very helpful. Now if I could find someone in the south Florida area that does that kind of repair, I would be a happy camper. I was thinking king of going to a Mazda dealership and asking where they out source that kind of repair.

Cheaper just to get another tach. I have a bunch of them. All 1985 tachs are the same.

Are you sure it's not the speedometer cable? They have been known to make a whirring noise. Does it make the same noise when not moving in neutral or the clutch depressed?
