There is a FD3S engine here in Texas for $1800 that would be a project for sure! But an LS conversion may overpower that chassis. I remember how flexy my FC3s was!

There are a lot of things to consider.

First what will the car be used for? Aiming for a certain power level is often a mistake. Having more power is fun in a straight line, however how the power is delivered is much more important. A single turbo 2J wont be as controllable in the corners, but would be great for the drag strip. An LSX based conversion will have plenty of power and a nice flat torque curve. A stock or IRTB Vq35de would also be tons of fun and have a nice smooth torque curve.

Cost, what are you aiming for. With enough money anything will go under the hood. The LSX route is probably going to be the least expensive because of the amount of readily available conversion parts. Even if someone gave you the 2J or the VQ they are still probably going to cost more than the LS. The motor is usually the least expensive cost of a conversion.

Fabrication skill and engine fitment. The width of the DOHC VQ poses more fitment problems and more custom parts would need to be made. The 2J is a much longer engine than the rotary so placing it back far enough to maintain balance would be more complicated. Once again the LSX is a very compact engine and would require much less cutting and fabricating.

The rotary as others suggested would be fun. My vote is still the LSX because of the simplicity. No matter what you choose have fun with it.

Just drop the stock 13b Turbo back in, less work and you could have a very nice 13b Turbo setup if you invest into that instead of using a stock swapped motor.

That's what I'd do, the kit to put in a different engine probably costs quite alot and rotary engines are very easy to work on since they're such a small engine.

As what a few members stated, if Emissions is not a factor for you then you're golden. Me personally I'd go for the 2JZ. So many more mods available for that motor then the VG30DE. Plus VG30DE is from the 300ZX... It's high maintenance motor. I used to own the Z32 300ZX and I've changed multiple injectors on it, I believe 4 injectors separate times. The 2JZ motor can be high maintenance too but I guess its just personal opinion too. Look at the specs for both motors and see which one can produce more power with the least amount of add ons. You can also google "rx7 2jz swap" and "rx7 vg30de swap" see which comes up with more results and see what kind of information you can pull off it.

first check with what emission standards your state has, that will dictate the swap.

Now decide how much money your willing to spend...

Personally lsX swap is the best for the money, good power, same 50/50 weight, well close enough and the price of replacement parts dirt cheap.

The vq and 2jz parts are hard to find and price are not cheap, just my input...

lsx for the win, thats what i have so im biassed

I would say to do a three rotor or go crazy and build a 26b witch is a four rotor
