Starts on Friday, dead on Saturday...what could this be?
Hello All,
I have an 85 Rx-7 with the 12A motor in it. Up until recently the car has been running very well. I bought it a few months ago from the original owner and he had just done a complete engine and transmission rebuild 15K miles ago. Last Friday when I got home from work, the car was running just fine, showing no symptoms that something may be wrong. On Saturday when I went to start it, it would not start, I would just continuously crank. It seems to be that it would have something to do with not getting spark. I had a 1st in High School and the Apex seal went out and I remember it having similar symptoms. Anyone have any insight to what this could be?

It could be anything.
The standard checks apply here. Check for spark. Check for fuel. Check for compression.
Is it just flooded? Pull the spark plugs and spin over the engine. If you get clouds of fuel vapor, it is flooded.

1. See if you have spark. While you have the plugs out, clean them off. If no spark, check ignitors and coils.
2. Look into the little windows on the carb (front/back) and make sure you have fuel up to the halfway mark. If no fuel, then check for power at fuel pump.
3. If you have spark and fuel, pour about an ounce of oil (motor, 2 cycle, etc.) down the smaller two barrels of the carb. Pump gas 3x and try to start again.
What happens when you flood a rotary is that you lose the oil film that aids in building compression. Pouring a little oil down the carb can replace the lost oil and rebuild compression. The trick is in not pouring too much in, which can foul the plugs.
Good luck.
