FL starting questions

Hi I am the new owner of a '93 rx7. I do not know much about the rotary engine so i am looking to this forum to help educate me . The car i bought has been sitting for 3 years so I would like some advice on what to do to try and start the engine. The car ran when it was parked. The car is now an automatic and i will be converting it to a 5 speed. Does anyone know where i might find a wrecked rx7 Fl area would be nice for the parts and any advice on doing the swap? Thanks, Justin

There is a thread with some info in the 3rd gen archives section under the title "AT to MT Swap." At one point before I found my 5sp I was shopping for an auto to convert. If the car is going to be kept close to stock there is a lot of stuff with the electricals. ECU and one of the CPU units is different as well as some of the sensors. Of course, there is all of the obvious stuff: trans, flywheel, driveshaft, pedals, mstr and slave cyls, etc.

However, you can find a lot of stuff on ebay cheap because many people have done mods and then sell off their stock parts.

I consider this a pretty involved project as did the people at Mazdatrix that I talked to about it. I would get what I have running and driving and then go from there so I could take the time needed to gather everything before starting the conversion, just my opinion for FWIW.

Even with an automatic, you're still going to enjoy having an FD.

As for getting the car started, with having sat for three years I would drain the gas tank, change the fuel filter, and change out oil and coolant at the least. If the tank is dry you will need to clean it also. Check the air filter and air box intake to make sure they are not trashed up. Check spark plugs and wires.

You could try to start it and see what happens but you may have to pull the injectors and have them cleaned. I mean real cleaning like sending them out to an injector service not just dumping some cleaner in the fuel tank.

After 3 years of sitting I would think that the injectors would need to be cleaned and the fuel lines blown out. If the gasoline that was up in the lines and injectors has dried out this would be necessary.

Some Marvel Mystery Oil or similar product in the plug holes, let it sit for a while like a day, and then try to gently turn the engine over by hand using a big ratchet on the front crankshaft bolt before trying to start the car. Make sure the engine will turn over by hand easily with the spark plugs out before cranking it.
