CA Starting help needed sometimes it just clicks

Im having and issue with starting, sometimes when i try to turn it over i just get a click it'll do this for 30sec or 5 min dont know why... then when it cranks the first crank 99% of time wont start the car but if I crank it then stop wait for the click(im told this sound is the motor priming) then crank again it'll fire up and attempt to idle at 3k rpm unless i tap the gas and it chills at 2k rpm till its warmed up(im led to believe thats normal)
i daily drive it and kind worked out a system of starting it but im fed up and would like to fix the problem once and for all

things you should know
91 na
street ported
battery relocated to cargo bins
Previous owner told me the tps is "bad"
and gave me some paper work that says the injectors aren't leaking

I cant think of anything else you guys might need to know

also on an slightly unrelated note i noticed an exhaust leak from were the catalytic meets my exhaust how bad is this?

Not a RX7 specialist, but sounds like a bad starter. Have you had it tested.

First start with all your battery connections including the grounds. Look for loose or dirty connections.Check them all and clean them, use di-electric silicon to coat all electrical connection such as battery posts and whatever else. If that doesn't do it you should check your starter. That's my take...start with the easiest thing first and move up to the more difficult and expensive possibilities. Keep us posted

Oh yeah and the 3k rpm cold startup is normal but not desired. Start the car in gear if you don't want it to do that.

My guess is bad starter.

The 3rd gens have an issue where not enough current gets from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid to pull in the solenoid every time....all you get is a click. If that's the case you'll need to get wiring diagrams and trace that circuit checking for corrosion and continuity.

Check grounds as clark13b said. My rx7 had a little lag when starting, and it was the ground going directly next to the starter. It was heavily corroded!
