Speaker replacement for a 1988 Turbo II with the Pioneer radio
Hello everyone. I'm sorry if this is a repeat question but I scanned the Threads and FAQs and didn't see the answer.
I have a 1988 Turbo II with the pioneer system. 2 dash speakers (4") and 2 door speakers (5.25"-6.5") and 2 strut tower speakers in the rear (5.25-6.5"). I need to replace the door speakers and the dash speakers as one of them on the driver side is blown. I'm a novice at this and just want to replace the speakers and keep everything stock. The car is in excellent condition with low miles and I want to preserve the original look. I understand replacing the head unit will improve the sound but as I only drive this very rarely for fun I don't need symphony quality.
I spoke with someone at Crutchfield who tried to tell me that the door speakers are only woofers and traditional speakers won't work. I have never heard this and was wondering does someone have experience replacing these speakers with commercial speakers? If so what did you use, what were the best size 5.25 vs 6.5"? Did you have to fabricate spacers or mounts for the strut tower speakers? Was there any power parameters I need to be aware of when looking at speakers so that the stock unit/amps can send an adequate signal?
Again, so sorry for the newbie questions and I appreciate any advice from the experienced members.

I would make sure you match the resistance of the speakers and you should be ok, make sure the power rating is enough for the factory output of the system. I am no audiophile but have replaced many speakers and head units in the fc.
If the door speakers are rated at 4 ohm resistance then put a 4 ohm speaker in it, I know some of the factory bose systems run 2 ohm stuff.
Buy a correct size speaker and wire it in. make sure you identify the positive and negative correctly.

When you are shopping, avoid speakers with tweeters that protrude much or at all in the center (in other words, you want 1 way speakers). The 2 ways often interfere with the oem speaker grilles. Crutchfield is correct about the woofers in the doors, but again I think you'd be okay to stick one way speakers in there if they are the same impedance. (I'm not 100% certain though, my car lacks the door speakers). If you do decide to replace the head unit in the future, you will probably want to run new speaker wires from the head unit to the speakers and bypass the OEM amplifiers, as they would no longer be necessary.

I also always try to run 1 way speakers, not a fan of built in tweeter two way stuff.
