smokey engine

Hi all,

I have a 1980 rx-7 which had a worn seal and started to leak oil and
smoking from the engine. Since then I rebuilt the engine with new
seals and gaskets and its running awesome. The problem is I am still
getting some smoke which looks to be coming from underneath the front
end of the carb. I have looked and cannot find anything that can cause smoke.
It also seems to start smoking when I shut the car off. I'm trying to trouble
shoot cause I don't have a good rotary mechanic near me. The guy that did the
rebuilt is in PA and I'm in NY. Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks in advance
ben

Could be coolant leaking from the O-rings that are between the intake manifold and the engine block. Can you tell what the smoke smells like (oil, coolant, fuel, etc.)?

I think it's coolant not fuel. Is there anyway i can tell without taking out the manifold?

No, but if it smells like coolant then that pretty much narrows it down.

Pulling the intake manifold off is not that hard. Keep the carb right on it, just label and disconnect the vacuum lines, and wires, take some photos if it will help. Remove the intake mani and you will see the o-rings. Order a new intake gasket and o-rings first, and you can have this finished up in a couple of hours.

Good luck...
