lean it out thru adjusting your air flow meter. worked for me. just make sure to mark where its set at beforehand if you wanna put it back to where it was

CA Need more info...

The emission control systems on our cars are too complex to make specific suggestions without more info about your car: N/A or Turbo? Original to CA or from another state? Stock factory engine and emission controls or modified? If modded, what? Did it pass for you in the past? If so, any changes, performance problems or major repairs since then?

Some general suggestions of things to do or check:
  • All vacuum hoses for leaks
  • Throttle position sensor setup
  • Idle speed / idle mixture setup
  • Run a tank of gas w/ fuel injector cleaner
  • Just before the test, give the car a good run & have it tested right away

Good luck,
Rob

Emissions & Exhaust
My car is having trouble passing emissions, but I have new spark plugs, filters, cats, etc. What do I do?

and:
J-rats Recipe for cheating emissions if its ABSOLUTELY necessary:

1. Turn variable resistor to full lean, or as lean as you can get and still run.
2. Trick ACV into pumping air to the cat all the time by removing the FORWARD UPPER vac hose, and capping it.
3. Run 87 octane
4. Run your tank down till your almost empty.
5. 2-3 bottles of alcohol in the tank. Drive VERY GINGERLY to the emissions station.
6. Once you pass go, DIRECTLY to a gas station and fill up with regular unleaded.

CA smog info search

If you have not seen this on the forum yet, it is possible to let Google search the forum for you. For example, enter Google search as "CA smog site:rx7club.com" and Google will return hits only from the forum that reference 'CA smog'.

For what it's worth, I've managed to get my 88 vert (178k) to pass five times since I brought it to CA. But over that period, I've replaced all the vacuum hoses, the air control valve and the fuel tank vent hose. My last 'fail' was mostly because the guy screwed up the vapor recovery test & had to start over. By the time he got to the actual sniff test, the cat was cold. I took it to another place where it was tested right away. It is passed easily (with fresh oil, plugs and air filter after running a tank with injector cleaner).

You may want to consider a fresh O2 sensor and replacing the EGR valve.

I don't think the EGR valve has much to do with actual emissions (on an FD at least), but replacing it got rid of my check engine light.

Instead of suggesting all kinds of cheats and possibly damaging fixes (adjusting the AFM?! Don't touch it!), just start simple.

Full tuneup.

Then one can go on to check more esoteric things like the condition of the injectors, cats, and emissions equipment.

Glad you are still there and figured out how to find your way back to the thread. Like I said in my original reply a week ago, give us some specifics about your car and we might be able to provide some more specific suggestions.

adjust your variable resistor to full lean, go to home depot paint section look for denatured alcohol by "KleanStrip". Make sure it's ethanol based not methanol. Add it to your tank 1 gallon denatured alcohol and 2-4 gallons of 87 octane gas and you're good to go. Make sure before you get it check to drive your RX in a spirited way, give it a good heavy pounding making sure that your cats are fully warmed up. I just passed mine last week. I thank all my fellow rotary enthusiasts for sharing their helpful-wonderful ideas in our forum.
