Exclamation Shifter trouble

hi i just bought a 1989 rx7 gxl, there are a few problems with it but the one that has stumped me thus far is that whenever i shift into 1st or 2nd it seems as though the shifter dislodges, it shifts into gear and everything fine and stays in gear but the shifter dislodges so i basically have to push the shifter diagonally left or 1st and diagonally bottom left for 2nd, can anyone help me????

Sounds like a bad or missing shifter bushing. The shifter comes out fairly easily, so you can check what's going on. New ones can be bought at www.mazdatrix.com.

Your issue is probably gear oil related. A lot of gear lubes (synthetic or convetional) don't lubricate as well when they're cold. But as the oil temp increases, the viscosity decreases and allows for smoother shifting. So, maybe you have a combination of bushing issues and cold trans oil making shifting that much harder.
