Shifter too far back
86 13b engine and transmission to be placed in a 64 spitfire. The trans shifter is too far to the rear. I need a trans that will bolt up and is top load shifter, has a shorter bell housing, different shift linkage, or something that will move the shifter forward 6-8-12 inches. Also on this same car i would like independent rear end with limited slip. I have access to a 94 rx7 gtu, which may work but i need to know how to id it. Any and all methods or ideas ar appreciated.

There's no such thing as a '94 GTU.
The 1st gen transmissions from the '78-'81 have remote mounted shifters and I believe many of the earlier transmissions do as well. I don't remember the position compared to the 2nd gen transmissions but I think they may be a bit more forward.
There is also the T-5 option. Kennedy Engineering makes a T-5 adapter kit and I'm betting there are a lot more options for T-5 shifters then there are for Mazda shifters.
