I haven't seen stars but I've seen a few people do custom led sets in Impalas, one was chevy bowties the other was the Impala logo(it didn't look so good) simpler designs look better. Stars would be pretty easy, or rotors, or the mazda m logo. All you need is an led replacement bulb and some soldering knowledge. you should be able to find 3rd brake light led retrofits that plug into a standard tail light socket and are a straight strip of led's. From these depending on how they are made you either bend them or cut and resolder in the shape you want.

Afaik if you mod a dot light but don't increase or decrease the brightness it doesn't matter. the local law enforcement is the bigger determining factor of what's legal or not. In my experience if they want to pull you over they'll find a reason, and if you get an attitude with them they'll find every possible thing they can to give you a ticket.

It wasnt the 3rd brake light it was in the s5 tails a star for each bulb, it looked really cool, it looked like a drifting trend

I was talking about modifying a dot led plug in 3rd brakelight, most are a flat strip of leds, by cutting the strip and resoldering it into the shape and size you want, then installing it into the s5 tail lights.

Or if legality is less of an issue you could use something like these
Side Emitting | Flexible LED Light Strips | LED Light Strips & Bars | Super Bright LEDs
Mount these on a small plate in the desired shape and wire into the tail lights. You could run 2 strips to get tails and brakes/turns or do some fancy circuit work to modulate the intensity of 1 strip.

thats a good idea but the star shape has sharp points on it and i feel like you couldnt replicate it with a strip, i wish i could find a picture of them
