RX7 stall and high idle.

Hey everyone

I just bought a 1985 RX7 GS. When I got it, it had been sitting for 2 years. The front breaks were seized so I replaced em. Also, I did a oil change and it was low on fuel so I put some premium fuel in it. My battery is on its way out and needs to be replaced.

Now, when I fire it up (sometimes needs to be boosted) she roars up and starts running. However I have to keep my foot on the gas to keep her on. If I let it off she dies. Now I needed to move it so I put I'd in drive and gave it some gas at the same time and she almost dies, but I got it to move and then she started running. I put it in neutral and it idles. I put it in reverse she goes. Then to park and I let it idle for a bit. She was idling around 1200 or so. Then I wanted to take it for a spin again (first rearwheel drive car and all) then it died. IV been reading around and some threads talk about replacing torque converter (it's a automatic btw). Some say do a Carb rebuild. Now, I'm pretty knew at this. I have been virgurously reading all I can about this car and trying to learn so I can help you guys help me.

If the best you can do is hit me with some links that's great! But direct response is awesome aswell.

Ps... I noticed I called my rx7 she the whole time. If that bothers anyone I'll stop x)

welcome to the board.

first, get a new battery. second, you don't need to use premium fuel in it. third, get a copy of the FSM and/or some other shop manual.

you should probably check for vacuum leaks and clean the carburetor. verify where the timing is as well. after those are out of the way, then you can set about trying to adjust the carburetor. it very well may end up need to be rebuilt, but start with a thorough cleaning for now.

nothing you've said has me thinking there's anything wrong with the tranny (other than it being automatic ), so aside from changing the fluid and filter, don't touch it.

i'm not really sure what i was thinking when i posted earlier this morning. i somehow missed the fact that all you mentioned was front brakes and an oil change. you should have also performed a tuneup. there may be all sorts of crap in the fuel system, so at bare minimum the fuel filter should be changed. so add that to all the things i said in my previous post.

Thanks for the reply. The fuel filter is on the list! I also noticed that the previous owner must have removed the Oil Metering pump. Hence straight gas won't do. Might be why it's a high idle? Also I just noticed my one back break is quite stiff, witch might be why it ends up stalling.
