Could be either the A/C compressor or the power steering pump starting to fail.

Is it near the front of the motor or near the rear?

Have you tucked your head under the car to see if you ran over anything...... like a plastic grocery bag. I ran over one months ago... stuck to the cat and smelled like what you are describing. Takes forever it seems to burn what I couldn't remove.

Could be road debris getting stuck, I had this problem before.
