I have my dad's 1985 Mazda RX7 GSL-SE with 43000 original miles. Unfortunately it hasn't been running in 15 years. The general census is drain the old gas, put in new gas, dump a half a can of seafoam in the gas tank and the other half in the crankcase and then turn it over a few times without the plug wires connected. Once it gets started let it run for about 5 minutes shut it off drain the oil put new oil in. Is it really that simple or should I be replacing gaskets, transmission filter and other things of this nature? I remember how fun it was to drive with my dad the one and only time he let me (I was 17 and he was in the car) but what a blast!!! Also I have never worked on a rotary engine before. I'm very excited and anxious to get it back on the road but I want to make sure I do this right.

In addition to what you said, new plugs and possibly plug wires are a good idea. The fuel filter must be changed. The injectors may be in need of service. Vacuum lines get old and brittle after years, so you may have to change those too.

I would recommend a complete fluid change (including brake, clutch, transmission, and diff), as you don't know how many miles are on them before it sat, and fluids do age after 15 years.

And you're probably already aware of this, but I wouldn't trust the tires for long. Also, be careful on the first few drives, as the brakes may be seized. A brake job may be in order. Really, you will have to decide on what is necessary for yourself as you bring the car back to life, as we can't see or feel it's condition.

Enjoy your new 7

Thank you

Thank you very much.. It's great to know there is such a place where people are willing to help you out. I've had the car for quite a while and I just wasn't quite confident enough to get started. This kind of support is just the boost I need to get started thanks again!
