KS Restoration Project

I got a 1983 Rx7 GSL around this time last year. It ran decent, but needed some work. I only paid $400 for it but I thought with a bit of work it would be well worth the money I put into it. In early February it suddenly died on me. I'd been having problems with its idle as it would die when I was at a stop light for no apparent reason, but I hadn't the money to get it looked at. I'm in a somewhat better position to fix it now.

The problems I am sure about are these:

1) The tranny seal needs replaced desperately. I drove it as little as possible because there was plenty of pink smoke floating behind my car. It sucked and I didn't like driving it that way, but didn't have much choice at the time as it was my only form of transportation. That started around mid-december. The tranny may need replaced, but I'm not sure because I kept it as close to full as I could.

2) The tranny dipstick needs replaced. I lost it when I took it home to park it the last time. A friend came out to check on it and when we put it on the trailer we forgot to replace the dipstick and it was sitting on the vents of near the windshield when we took off. Needless to say it was not there when we got it home. I have been keeping it covered with tinfoil and a rubberband.

3) The exhaust needs replaced. sometime in January the entire exhaust system forward of the catalytic converter fell off. My dad came out and welded it back on as best he could, but it has since fallen off again and I would prefer just to straight pipe it if possible.

4) The motor and possibly the entire power assembly needs replaced for the passenger side window. It's never worked since I had the vehicle.

5) The dashboard needs replaced. This is more of a cosmetic change. It's got a large rip down the center of the dash and I just want to get it replaced.

6) The seat leather needs replaced. Again more of a cosmetic change. The seats work well enough as they are, but the seat leather is wearing thin and the cloth seat covers that I got for them are constantly sliding off.

7) My dad is looking at replacing the carburetor. We're not sure if it needs it or not, but he thinks if we replace that it will stop the stalling issue I was having before. It's an automatic tranny so it's not like I'm stalling it out because I don't know how to drive a standard.

You can get a lot of carb troubleshooting/tuning info over at www.sterlingmetalworks.com

The exhaust system will hurt. They are expensive. They have to be heavy gauge stainless steel in order to deal with the extreme heat of a rotary exhaust. Racing Beat is the usual choice, although some have created custom systems that also work well for a little less money. You can find info on this by searching in the 1st gen section.
