Rebuilding a S4 motor.
Hello,
I have a 87 rx7 with a N/A motor which is currently not running. I would like to rebuild this motor but would like to make it Turbo S4/ and have it half-bridge ported.
I never rebuilt a motor myself but would like to do so and learn how. The porting will be done professonially.
So my questions are, how hard is it?, i have knowledge of rotaries but I never rebuilt a motor so would i able to do it myself? Going from a N/A to turbo, how hard is that? (pretty sure keeping it a S4 turbo, it shouldnt be).
Any help, comments, feedback, and or any information is appreciated.

Purchase a J-spec S4 TII engine and rebuild that.
As far as the bridgeport, how much power do you want to make? Because once you go bridgeport, you have mandatory upgrades:
-full turbo upgrade
-intercooler and all related turbo plumbing
-standalone EMS and associated fuel system
-misc. like gauges, clutch, plumbing, etc.
What are your goals and use for the car?

power wise, not looking for much. anywhere from 300-350 is good.
what do u mean by full turbo upgrade and plumbing?
goals and use for the car are to build it for time attacks.

For only 300-350HP, a bridgeport is wasted.
None of the J-spec engines available are really running, since they have all been pulled from their cars and tossed into a shipping container. The most important thing is to buy from a reputable vendor like Japan2LA on this forum.
For that power level you'll have to upgrade the turbo. You can get away with a stock hybrid turbo like the BNR stage 2. Since the J-spec won't come with any useful wiring or ECU, you'll want to pick up a standalone. After that it's just a standard TII swap (see FAQ). A front mount and associated plumbing will be required to keep intake temps under control and you'll need to upgrade injectors and the fuel pump.
If you are going to open up the engine, then a street port is the way to go. If you're not going to open it, then the turbo I suggest will be fine on stock ports. There isn't really a reason to port the engine at the 300HP level.

You can get away without a standalone, but you're going to be into reliability issues. The stock ECU uses a fairly aggressive timing curve which isn't suitable for upgraded turbos. My rule is that once you're away from the stock turbo, you need a standalone.
Hybrid turbos up to about 350HP can make due with a tunable stock ECU like the RTek.
