WV Quick question - Buying advice

Ok, I am sure this has probably been answered before, but I want the most up-to-date answer I can possibly get, so I am posting a new thread. I am sorry if this is na inconvenience.

Basically, I will be buying an RX7 hopefully sometime around mid-December (Provided I can find the "right one") and I was wondering what a N/A FC is worth now a days as well as a Turbo FC.

Sorry if this post is a bit vague, but hopefully it is narrowed enough to net a simple answer.

Thanks,
Jon

Determining worth is difficult on an older car like this. A lot of the "worth" depends on the condition of the car. In the end its "worth" whatever you want to pay for it.

What is your budget?

Check out the FAQ threads and also check out the Classifieds here on the forum to get some high level info of what is available for a given price/condition combo.

I find buying a car is alot like buying art... It is only in the eye of the beholder.
If you love the car. The body lines the power it puts down then you should have it.
Most often not will you get a good return on your investment. But if you are looking for investments you should be talking about investing money with a stock broker not buying a car.

Good luck with the purchase hope the car is all that you want it to be.

What an FC is worth.
What an FC will cost.
Two different things.

My '88 cost me $5000 to buy, plus another $3000 in upgrades, parts, and labor.
Even after all that, it was still only worth $5000 on the open market.
Until the guardrail incident.

I paid $2500 for my '91.
Learning how to wrench some things has lowered my labor costs; finding JDM parts etc. has upped my parts costs.
By the time I'm done, the total cost will probably be well over ten grand and the car will still only be worth half of that.
Example: a friend gave me a 5 speed transmission so we can swap out my automatic; it's still going to be around $1000 in other parts before I'm able to shift gears witout that Hold button.
Pedals, Slave/Master, Hoses, Driveshaft, Starter, Clutch/P-Plate/Flywheel, Shifter/****, Crossmember/Mounts, Bearings/Boots/Seals... it all adds up real quick.

Depending on your motivations for buying one and what it needs to get it into the type of car you want (daily driver? track car?), your ability to work on it yourself, how far you're willing to travel to pick it up, and your patience to find the right one, your FC could end up being worth more than it cost, or it could easily go the other way.

I've seen FC's listed for $700 and others for $12,000.
While I can see where an FC might cost 12k, I don't know that it would be worth that much. To a buyer anyway. I'm sure there are owners here on the forum that have 2nd gens that are worth $12,000 to them, I doubt that they're for sale.

When you do find one, have someone that knows what to look for check it out for you. And by all means, compression test it first.

GLW whatever you decide.
Aloha,
~j

I plan to make it my project, so I don't even really care if it runs. What I am mainly looking for when I say "the right one" is a body and chassis that is not too destroyed. Mostly rust-free (Although after some reading, I am realizing that finding a rust-free RX7 is near impossible), and the interior is decently clean. I'm still debating whether I wan to go turbo or N/A, so that will play a part as well. I am still doing my research on how much power a N/A can make potentially and how easily it is compared to a turbo setup. It is my understanding (Please correct me if I am wrong) that the N/A's can rev much higher than the turbo models and I REALLY would like a high rever, so ig I can get like 300whp out of an N/A (I know this is probably impossible going by traditional engines, but maybe rotarys are different) I would be perfectly happy. This will in NO WAY be a high hp car. just a fun one I can have fun with and go from there.

Like I said I am stilldoin my research and I have a month or so before I have the money to even begin to look for one, so I have time to make my decision. Hopefully you guys can help with that decision as well
