NY Question about wiring in an electric fuel pump

Its time to put in my fuel pump in my GLC 12a conversion. I have a couple of questions...

My car is running a stock nikki carb and stock rx7 fuel pump

1. Can I just pick a circuit that is "hot " with the key on and wire in my pump or do I run a whole separate circuit with its own fuse and relay?

2. Is it ok to mount the pump in the engine bay or does it need to be near the tank?

The car originally had a mechanical fuel pump so there is no existing circuit to use already. Thanks for any help in advance

I'd run a fused power wire through a relay. Use a wire that is powered as the trigger for the relay. For example, on an FC, power comes through a 15A fuse in the interior fuse box, and is directed to the pump by the circuit opening relay.

For placement, search around to see if anyone mounts them in the engine bay. OEM placement is always at the tank as far as I know.

If you do wire the fuel pump through a relay that is powered anytime the key is on, make sure to include a tipover/inertia switch in the circuit so that if the car ends up in a collision the fuel pump cuts out.

Ok thanks...so I can assume (or consult the fsm) that a 15A fuse is suitable protection for this circuit??? Painless has a kit to do it too, but it is a a little new to me. Always dealt with cars that had and electric pump already...lol.

Thanks Aaron...its something you don't ever want to think about, but totally necessary.

Fuse rating will depend on how much current your pump is capable of drawing, but it'll probably be ok. The fuel pump in an NA FC only draws about 5A max.
