Question about ECUs

I have a 88 convertible and also an 86 coupe n/a. The 86 is my parts car. Is it a bad Idea to take the ECU out of the 86 and put it in the 88 vert. I have noticed that the Codes on it are different. But I have also read the the 88 vert's ECU can be used in place of the 86-87 turbo IIs ECU. So I am a bit confused. I am also wondering what could be the harmful results.

The harnesses are slightly different. Generally you can interchange any ECU that the first 3 digits match.

For example, you can use a N327 in a car that had a N326, but not in a car that has a N332.

That said, the N326 will probably run a vert that had the N338 ECU, but the programing for the injectors will be wrong (Saturation Vs Peak and Hold) and there are minor other tweaks that may create drivability issues.

I see. I have swaped them due to curiosity and the fact I didn't read this yet. I have notice a hesitation between 3k-4k rpms. I believe this is the imfamous primary secondary hesitation where one cuts off before the other begins causing a slightly noticable hesitation.
