Is it possible to get my ideal FD3?

As soon as my current car sells I'm looking at a FD3. Ideally I'd like a Yellow Touring Editions, but it doesn't look like that is possible.

FD3S:USDM Production Numbers

After looking at this, CYM only came in R1 package and in a very limited number since it was only available in 93. Does anyone know if any of these came with the sun roof? Since what I really want is a CYM with a manual trans and a sun roof.

Almost anything is possible nowadays. When you look through the forum, you will find some threads that state that it was sometimes possible to get "options" like this on a particular car through the dealer at the time, but a lot of the time people disagree, and it goes back and forth.. this is another thread lol. Finding a CYM is more difficult, because as you said they are low in number, and thus cost more especially if they have been a garage queen most of their life. You could always molest the poor thing and go aftermarket and get one installed, but I remember hearing 10 years ago or so, of people having leak issues due to weather changes (cold=shrink), bad quality installs etc due to the roof having to be cut and a window installed. Or simply get a red touring as they are the most common, paint it yellow because it will be needing new paint anyways if its the original red paint, and your on your way. I'd never do such a thing to a perfect sports car (I have an R1) but that's just my 2 cents.

Any CYM will have a your 5 spd. But since none of the 'R' models were equipped with an open roof, no CYM will have one of those unless it's aftermarket.
In fact, sunroofs are generally NOT desirable for those that track or autocross (things the 'R' models were presumably targeted at) as they reduce head-room. With a helmet, if you're much over 5'9" and have a sun roof, you have issues.

Well that's disappointing. The car looks bad *** in yellow, but I'd love a sun roof for cruising Pacific Coast Highway. I've never actually had a car painted since usually a good paint job is around $5K, and than money can be spent on go faster parts.

With that being said, what do you plan to do with your ideal FD3S?

I guess I'm going to have to let go of this idea. I guess I can live with silver or make do with red. Perhaps somewhere down the road I'll get one painted...In which case black would be good because then I wouldn't need to paint the engine bay.

Learn to paint? The tools aren't all that expensive so all you really need to invest is your own time.

Unless it's done right, changing colors on any car only reduces it's value. And a DIY job is about the worst. This is a FD, not a 20 yr old Civic. Might as well paint the interior plastic body color. Even with a professional job, changing colors on some cars hurts resale....I'd put the FD in that category. And doing it right involves pulling the engine, all moldings and trim and at least some of the interior. Painting the doors, hatch, bumper covers and hood off the car.
So unless you buy a POS car that's good for little more than parts, you loose both the money you spend on the paint job and in resale. Makes no sense.

That's sound advice unless we're talking about a dream car that, once acquired, you'd never sell. I'd say the FD is that car for many people.

Probably won't paint. Like I said the money could be spent on parts instead. Maybe if I finished the mechanical and had some extra money stashed away.

If you searched, you'd find the boards are full of such sentiment...."Dream car", "I'll never sell it". With very few exceptions, those guys aren't active on here anymore. The reason? They sold the car.

I said the same thing about my MKIV when I got it, but things happen. When I mod a car I don't do it for the value of the car, since usually it either doesn't effect the value or makes it harder to sell, I do it because it's what I want. It make the car more mine because I put my own personality into the car.

I'm hoping I don't ever have to sell my FD,but one thing I learned
In the past 2 years is that money talks, everything is for sale for the
Right price.

True, I remember when I had the Supra (before I had to put it up for sale) people would always ask me "How much do you want for it?" I'd respond "$35K". They'd follow with "That's to much" and I'd finish with "Well. that's because I don't want to sell it" But if they said okay, I'd probably have sold it...Then bought another one and modded it with the extra cash

You could always get a vinyl wrap put on. Not only will it not damage resale, but it'll also protect the paint, and it costs about 1/5th the price of a good paint job and if you get tired of it or it gets damaged you just peel it off.

I've seen some vinyl wraps, but there is always folds at the corners. If I did use vinyl it would be for highlights or simple graphics like stripes. If I get a car with a blown engine then I could paint it and at least get the engine bay at the same time, or get a black one and not worry about the engine bay.

I've seen some bad wraps but most were at home jobs. A good installer can get a wrap on just about anything without any wrinkles or bubbles. Here is a vid of a wrap being installed on a Lotus Exige which has just as much curves as an fd if not more.

your only hope is to find someone parting one out and buy the chassis and repaint it. rather than tearing a complete car apart. then build the motor however you want it from scratch. take more time and money but it will be done your way and be right cause your never gonna find a CYM, ive only seen two in person locally.

and the sunroof idea is silly, non sunroof is the way to go, this is affirmed being that im 6 foot 5, as you might not be but headroom is your friend and a unibody thrives on rigidity to me a sunroof is a compromise. thats a con not a pro. people remove them for a reason and you want one on purpose? hmm to each his own but good luck.
