Please help, fuel pump wiring

I started to dig into why my fuel gauge hasn't been working and ran into a doozy.

I understand that blk/wht is power
Blk is ground
And that red and blue are for level and low fuel lights.

The has been running fine so I'm confused to how this is working since the blk/wht is not hooked up

i would pull the pump from the tank and see what they have done, likely there is a broken bulkhead stud on the inside of your fuel pump housing and they decided to use one of the sender unit wires instead.

not the proper way to fix it obviously, but i guess it's one way to finish getting from point a to b for a little while. except they apparently never bothered to actually fix it before passing the problem on to you. to which i am not entirely or even remotely surprised by it, because crap like this finds its way to FCs all the time.

It looks like they are all in tact underneath the cover

i think you misunderstand, you will probably understand what i mean when you take the pump unit out of the tank and i bet your red fuel sender wire is now the new feed for the fuel pump's blue wire inside the tank.

I gotcha now. So if this the case and the PO swapped them out, an I going to have to find a whole assembly to replace it with?

That won't change the fact that the previous owner repurposed the wires at the car side. What probably happened is one of the studs on the bulkhead broke off, and instead of fixing it, decided to be "clever". So you can fix or replace the fuel hanger assembly and revert the car harness to stock. Then it should all work as intended assuming nothing else was mucked with. I wouldn't assume anything with these cars though, you won't know more until you investigate with a DMM.

Edit: Ben evidently already spelled this out above.

It is still using the blk/wht on the car side. It's just using red from the fuel pump connected to the blk/white car side. The red on the car side is just cut off. I wasn't sure if I needed to replace the hanger assembly if the contact's on the inside are no good.

Looks like I'm tracing wires next weekend

Is there some sort of fix for those bulkhead fittings? I only see the whole assembly online for 340.00. I'll keep looking though.

I'm considering anything outside of the fuel tank the car side, under that mess of tape is where lies the DIY special.

It's easy.

- Grind off the top layer of epoxy to expose the brass contact.
- drill a hole through the center, but do not completely drill out the contact.
- Use SS nut, bolt, and washers to make connection as original.

you can drill the broken one out and install another bulkhead connector or find a good used pump housing here or on ebay.

I really appreciate all of the advice.

I'm going to try to source a used assembly to swap in and then drill out this one as a spare.
