PFC or not to

PFC or not to
Hello All
Been lurking for awhile and decided I needed to join. I'm recently back into working on my 93 FD after some years off and the kids are getting older. I live in Nebraska and the only one who is semi-able to work on the car is the dealership. With that in mind will a PFC be reliable and stable enough that I won't have any problems after it is set up and installed. It sounds like it will still need minor tuning after install correct? My mods are minor right now (DP,M2 intake catback, sequential turbos). I'm thinking if I do the PFC I'll eventually do a SMIC of some sort. Or do I start with the SMIC and do the PFC afterward that way it is tuned for it. Thanks for the replies.

Do the IC first. You will benefit from lower air temps. You won't really gain anything with the PFC in your current setup. The PFC is a progammable ECU. Its really only beneficial when you have a real reason to have a fuel or ignition map that the stock one doesn't support.

Agreed^
I drove my car for several years with (essentially) those same modifications on the stock ECU.
More important (and cheaper) than a PFC is making sure you have all reliability mods in place. Not that I have all the answers, but feel free to PM me, I'm in Bellevue.
The FD is not drastically different from any other car aft of the bellhousing, but under the hood is a different story. My experience with dealerships especially, is that most/all of the techs have never even seen an FD in person. Long-term ownership in this part of the county requires a willingness to DIY.... and a certain masochism.

Thanks for posting guys, I'm still on the fence about this. A couple of rx-7 shops say go with the PFC first. Anyway I'm looking into putting together my own SMIC with parts from rotary-works.com. Anyone know anything about there product. It looks like I maybe able to build a unit similar to the pettit unit/m2 for a bit less money. Any sugustions.

Regardless, several choices in SMICs. Alot of things to consider other than simple core size. There's also pressure drop, ease of install, fitment with or without relocating the battery. And a SMIC is only as good as the duct. While most SMICs will not fit with the stock intake box, many WILL fit with your M2 intake.
At some point it just boils down to personal taste. If you haven't already, search in the 3rd Gen. section for more info. Here's one but there are others...

My choice would be to go with the PFC first before the IC. The general rule regarding fuel system upgrades has been 3 mods on the FD. You already have intake, dp, and catback. I've seen people detonate on their stock PCMs with only 2 mods. IMO better safe than sorry, but I prefer to error more on the side of caution. Again, JMO!
