NY Noob! Just picked up my first RX-7 w/ pics

Hello everyone! My name is Mike and I just bought a 1985 Mazda Rx-7. I am really into Jeeps so this is somthing totally new for me. I bought the car from the original owner, My G/Fs uncle for $500. The motor has 100k on it and the last time he started it was 3 years ago and the last time it was registerd was 1999 so its done it fair share of sitting.

I was able to get the engine running for a bit, but after all the Fuel in the carb ran out it only runs on starting fluid. I tested the fuel pump relay with a test light and only the two Black w/ white wires had power not the blue w/ white or black w/ yellow. What two wires do i touch to do the bypass trick? And I am a super noob with this stuff. I can build a jeep up but this it quite different

Thanks all!

If it's been sitting a while with gas in the tank and gas in the carb, you've got a lot of work ahead of you because that has left scale, varnish and gunk in the tank and in the carburetor. If you've run the car til the gas in the tank ran all the way up to the carb and then emptied from there, it's time to disconnect fuel lines and run compressed air at each section to clean that junk out. The gas tank is a real tricky one to deal with. What does the fuel filter, found inside a chassis rail just in front of the rear driver's side tire, look like? If there's no junk there, then you may have gotten real lucky and the tank is still ok. Replace that fuel filter anyway and then start from there as far as disconnecting lines and blowing junk out.

The problem is that the Nikki carb is probably going to need to be rebuilt anyway. The '84 I have now had its carb rebuilt in 2006, was run for a year and then sat unused until 2010. Even though it sat for just three years, the carb was almost toast because the gas was never drained. One of the local carb guru's here pulled the top, pulled an old skool trick and then finished cleaning what he could before bolting it back together again. It still rumbles like it has a SBC in it which is not correct for this basically stock 12A but it no longer idles for 2 minutes, stumble and then stop like it used to do right after I put it back on the road way back when. It also pulls down 19.5 mpg on basically no tune and a bad carb, so it needs work but it gets the job done. Previously, before I sent it to that shop, I was sure I had a vacuum leaking causing the stumble and had assumed the carb rebuild in 2006 must still be ok since it was only 4 years old. Wrong.

Thanks for your reply mate!

The fuel filter is white with a brownish tint inside however I have a new one that came with the car and looks exactly the same. I took a bildge pump from a boat with a 5 gallon tank and hooked it to the carb and she started right up. The choke was on and it was idling at 3000 rpm. The PO said somthing about a heat sensor that would cause the car to have high idle and run warm. Im thinking Coolant Temp Sensor? Not sure.

I also determined that the fuel pump is shot, I plan on taking the line off the tank and see what color gas comes out, Im hoping that i dont have to drop the tank but oh well. The wipers arent working, and the clutch has no pressure in the pedal. I will be replacing the slave and master as well.

The motor ran strong for about a minute until i ran out of gas, and the idle didnt kick down from the 3000 rpm, idk if thats cuz that sensor or the choke?

Thanks everyone!
