MD Nikki Carb and new rebuild

Just bought a 83 Rx with a rebuilt nikki. I cant get it to idle at the 750 rpm very well. Ive adjusted the mixture and the idle. Cant get it to do the 750. Itl do 850 just fine. Also its backfiring pretty bad from high RPM. Dont know too much about carbs. So any info would be awsome. Thanks.

nothing wrong with idling at 850. any special reason that it must idle at 750?

Not really, Other than it just dosnt run quit right. From idle gotta feather it litely other wise itll cut out. It has hesitation also from idle. Id just like to get to run like factory. Or better

getting it to run like it did from the factory wont happen just from the age of the equipment ur dealing with. the hesitation/stumble off idle is an accelerator pump issue. the question is whether the person that rebuilt the carb knew what they were doing. u may have to do back and do it again.

I do doubt the guy that rebuilt it knew what he was doing. Ive got two carbs that came with the car, So ill probley buy a rebuild kit and rebuild the better looking of the two carbs then. Ill check the timing. Should i set it back to stock or is there something that i could set it to to get me some decent power?

Alright sounds good. As soon as i can get her unbaried from the snow and back home ill try to get that timing issue resolved. I did set as advanced as i could get it and runs smooth as a whisle at the moment. Stupid alternator decided to seiz on me also. Luckly i had ordered a new one yesterday.

The older this equipment gets, the more it will leak vacuum. The more vacuum you leak, the harder it will be to get the idle down to the specified settings. Replacing vacuum lines, intake manifold gasket, rebuilding the carb, any of these will help to reduce the vacuum losses and restore performance. Best to take it in little steps though.

Ya it is a little old. But not that many miles. Just over 80000. What i do have planned is header, Get ride of the rats nest. Get her safely timed, Msd 6a or 6al wich ever i can find the cheapest. more power full coils. thats it for now. Maybe later down the road a new intake. Or somehow modify the stocker to use like a edelbrock or a holley carb. She been set for track racing so she handles pretty good. Just gotta fix the rear sway bar set up. The end links hang down pretty low, And i dont wanna get cought on something with those and do some really horrid damage.

Ive been searching to find a thread to do a stripped nikki and cant find a decent one. Something with pics so i can fig this out. lol. Thinking of running her with open headers tommorow
