Question new rx7, need help - starts but dies and can't shift

I picked up an 86 rx7 na a/t for 650, thinking it was a bargain.
the po said it was leaking from the fuel regulator and the po before him tried to jbweld it.

so i picked up a new pulsation damper and while putting it in, it seems one of the two po's didn't properly put the intake back together. there were missing nuts and bolts, which, fortunately didn't fall off the cowl during the tow home.
so i get the pd in, hook all the hoses up to where they appeared to go by the fairly stiff hoses keeping their shape. there was a steel line under but close to the pd, attached to a larger line. the smaller line had a 1" piece of hose on it with a screw in the end. traced it back, looks like the fuel return, so i hooked the return off the regulator to it.

tried to start, nothing. check the engine relays, still nada. checked the interior fuses, all good....and now it starts. possibly an improperly seated fuses...i've seen stranger things.

it starts, but dies after a few seconds. i can hold the gas and rev and its fine, but when i let off, it dies. i believe it's a vacuum leak but can't find anything. also, as i stated above, i went by where the hoses stood to judge where they went.

the only thing that looks out of place was that in the rear of the intake there was a spot with 3 inlets and 2 hoses. the hoses with the screw found a temporary home here.

i also traced an unconnected hoses by the drivers firewall to the charcoal can, but can't for the life of me find the spot it plugs into.

also i figured since i could rev it, i'd move it away from my old car so i could hop in the drivers door (once i fix the latch). but it doesn't shift. i can hear the cable moving into place on the transmission, but it does nothing. it starts in park and neutral, but not in drive. engine speed does nothing, high or low.

the fluid level is good. looks to be something electrical.

and theres a couple of mystery parts. theres a fluid reservoir by the charcoal can, bone dry. and a green plug by the amf's yellow 2 pin that looks like the diagnostic port by the relays.

the battery is brand new as the old one was dead, and the hoses that weren't connected stood right by the respective ports. unless i mixed up a few that were bunched together. and the big guy on the rear pic is hooked back onto the intake tube too.

i tried the search and have a dmm. any suggesstions would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, JB weld does not work for preventing a PD from leaking as your picture shows.

The little line that you have plugged up is for the Cruise control that you don't appear to have.

The tank near the Charcoal Canister is for the sub zero cold start system. It should be removed and not used as Mazda put out a TSB for it to be removed when the car was brought in for service to the dealer. It was supposed to help start in very cold temps, but really only helped increase emissions.

Get some Automotive Starting fluid (any Walmart and most auto parts stores will have it) and while a buddy is holding the throttle to make the car run at a constant speed, spray the starter fluid around the intake and throttle body. If the RPMs increase at any time, that is where the vac leak is.

haven't checked for a vacuum leak yet, but i found the spot for the charcoal can hose, replaced the hose with a screw with a real vacuum cap and checked the tps.

i checked the tps per http://howto.globalvicinity.com/gv_w...i=58&co=1&vi=1
a to b got 1.4k at idle, 4.3k open
a to c strangely got 2.3k at idle and 5k open
also, the plunger sticks something fierce and it was darn near impossible to read from the connector side, had to check from the wire side of the plug.
looks like i need a new one.

anyone have any ideas on why it won't shift? all vacuum lines appear to be connected.

got the new tps in and adjusted. starting much quicker now and holding rpms. no vacuum leaks. burped the coolant.

still dies when i let off.

talked to the po again, seems the car sat for about a year and a half now. wish he told me that when i bought it, instead of saying it was recently running.

car was on e when i got it, i poured in 5 gallons of gas and a bottle of lucas. possibly old gas?
it runs smooth at the higher rpms, but below around 3700 its rough.

also found tonight from holding it running longer that i have an exhaust leak near the cat.

exhaust is thick and the normal, smokey color.

also, my coolant cap is bad. after getting it up to temp, i could hear a leak.

didn't try to shift, since there was a car in front of it, but the last time i tried, it would not shift into drive. neutral works.

after a forum search and quick check outside, the car has not had the throttle body mod done.

nor will it.

tried resetting the idle screw yesterday with no results.

i played with the plug wires and it hasnt started since,
there is a mystery hose connector at the airbox that has been capped off. i have new plug, and wires as well as a fuel filter.

at this point...im going to try what i have and if that doesn't solve it, its ls1 for me. with my last car crapping for no reason that that car's club members can figure out as well as a couple of ase mechanics and this one not working, i am so damn close to just going piston and being done with it.
