Welcome aboard. They're fun cars, and can be dependable if properly cared for.

Spend some time reading over in the 1st gen section.

They are not cras that are hard to take care off. The usual run down, chnage the oil regularly and change fuel filter, maintain proper coolant and oil levels and the cra should run like a champ. According to the condition of the car, then you may expect some problems, like the freeplay in the steering box( to answer your question, i just changed mine like a week ago and its not so hard, a couple of bolts, a gear puller, a big hammer, wd40, and patience and persistence will get a new one in there, or you can take it to a shop and get charged like $350 for changing it only. A problem, not really, i spent a year with mine, with more than 2 inches of free play to each side, you get used to it) The other stuff, is to do a carb rebuild according to carb condition, flush fuel tank, flush radiator, change oil, new spark plugs and remove rats nest if your state does not have smog control and last of all, as you go along change all the vaccum lines little by little, you will be greatful later. apart from that, it should not be big problems that would render your car undrivable. If any problem comes up there is tons of help here for any problem. We have seen it all. lol good luck

owned a few of them... find someone who is knowledgable about rotary engines and pick their brain. If they will let you watch them work on one take the time to do so

Air up the tires, and take it somewhere for a lube job. Most quick change oil places will grease the front end for you for free, simply in hopes of generating future business. Or, better yet, buy a grease gun and get your own hands dirty. That helps a lot as far as turning effort goes.

As far as slop in the steering goes, it's an issue with most older 7s. 90% of the slop can be taken care of simply by replacing tie rod ends, idler arm, ball joints, bushings, and maybe one or two other things. Most of these items will need to be replaced anyway, so you might as well do it right off the bat so that you can enjoy the results yourself.

DO A COMPRESSION TEST this can give you a good estimate of the condition of the seals/engine also look all around the car like interior condition body, paint, frame, coolant leaks(or leaks of any kind) if these things dont pass your inspection it is always better to wait and find one that dose pass your inspection you willl be glad you waited. read up all the information you can and take a look at a few buying guides for a more specific list on what to look for and how to check the condition. good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of rx7's
