Question New to rotary, have an issue with my fc3s

Hi everyone, I recently purchased a jdm spec 1988 rx7 turbo model and have been having some hiccups with it as of Friday. I got the car shipped to me here in connecticut from Florida. When it arrived I noticed it would hesitate a lot when you really give it some gas. However, as it has been starting to warm up lately the hesitation has been getting a lot better and had practically gone away. Besides running a little rich (heavy gas smell from exhaust) it was running great. I figured it may just be an altitude issue or tuning issue. Anyways, friday my buddy gave me the bright idea to try and take the mass air flow sensor off and clean it with a special type of aeresol spray. But I never even ended up spraying it, the second I got the connector off a little bit, I could tell it looked completely different then what Im used to ( I'm coming from subarus). So I went to go plug it back it and forget the whole idea until I noticed that one of the metal pins inside looked it was completely off. Almost as if the factory sodering job had come undone. And I was right because it fell right out lol. Ok I said well let me try starting it anyways, so I plugged it back in, started it and the car immediately died. I tried starting it with the connector unplugged and it did start, but had no idle obviously so that wasn't a solution. At this point I had to call it a day and decided to leave the car at my friends house until the part came in. I would trailer it but the car is too low for a normal flatbed or tow truck. This was Friday. That night I ended up buying a new/refurbished mass air flow sensor from rock auto and putting that in last night. Thank you USPS for slow *** shipping. 2 day priority my ***. Now that I got the new part in, the car will start but has a very low idle around 500 rpm. When u rev it past ~4k it starts to cut out. I figured maybe because I had started it before with the sensor unplugged it might of thrown the car into a type of limp mode. So I tried u plugging the battery to maybe reset the ecu. Left it unplugged for around 10 min, plugged it back in and nothing. Still having the same issue. At this point I just want to get the car back home since it's been sitting in the hood waiting for a theif to come along. I ended up driving the car home in first gear very slowly. When I tried to shift to second the car would just bog out. Any ideas as to what my problem might be? The only thing I can think of is that, either the refurbished part I got is no good. Or the jdm spec mass air flow sensor is different from it's USDM counterpart? The part I ordered was for an 88 turbo rx7 but the usdm model. They look exactly the same on the outside but who know about the inside. Another thing I was thinking of is that maybe it's something different altogether? Fuel pump maybe? Which would really suck because I hate when things go bad at the same time which I'm sure everyone does!!

I appreciate any feedback or help guys, thank you!

The car has fmic, his intake; full exhaust and that's really about it for engine/power mods.

If the AFM needs replacement then you would be better off buying a used one from this site (classified section) as opposed to purchasing a remanufactured one from the local parts store for they usually are not in working order. Now even if you were to get your hands on a working AFM you might find that your car still has issues and the problem lies elsewhere.

Thank you satch. My cousin okie is coming to see the car tomorrow, hopefully he can help figure things out. He knows rotary a lot more than myself.

Hey satch, I am wanting to post a wtb thread but it seems I can only post in the new member section? The forum will not let me post a reply or create a new thread anywhere else. I have over 10 posts now too.
