New member/ New rx owner / Clutch question

So I guess I'll start off by introducing myself. Names Sam and I live in south jersey. Just turned 21 this past week (happy birthday to me!)

As sort of as a present to myself I'm going to be acquiring an 85 rx7 at the end of this week, most likely on friday when I get paid. It's got about 134k in it, all stock. It's currently the guy I'm getting it from's daily driver and it will become mine as well.

Got a few minor rust spots that he has primered before they got any worse, paint is old but still has some shine when its cleaned. It's in overall good condition and he is only the second owner. Sitting on supra wheels and he is including all 4 original wheels also.

Now I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to cars, but I am no mechanic. I'm gonna be learning through this car and I'm in the process of saving up money to go back to school and take the Ford program like my friend did. He just got an rx8 a few months back and currently works at Ford in Medford, NJ and can help me out with a lot of the work.

But on to my question. The guy has informed me that the clutch has slipped a few times in 3rd gear. I don't have much experience with manual transmissions. My first intention with the car was to replace the clutch just as a precautionary measure, however, my father is trying to tell me that I will have to rebuild the whole transmission.

Like I said, I don't have much experience in this area and I am not getting the car til this coming weekend so I can't really give too much information at the moment. I'm more or less looking for some advice and information on how to approach this.

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post. I'm including a picture of the car that I took when it was brought to my house the other day.
