New FC
Hey guys, my name is Brad, and I just got an FC. It's a 1990 rx7 gtu n/a. I got it from a coworker, so I got a really good deal on it, and it just got a rebuilt engine that has about 3-5k miles on it. The only real problems are that its been sitting for probably over a year and the passenger side rear rim is cracked, but I already took care of that at a pick a part for real cheap .
So anyways, we've been trying to get it to run. The only "hardware" on the engine we've replaced so far is the sparkplugs, and I checked the fluids, which I'll replace eventually but for now they were pretty good, just want to get it started. Also, we've been putting in fuel injector cleaner with the gasoline. My coworkers dad thought this was the problem, just that they were clogged.
Back the the future, the only way we could get the car to start and run was by spraying starting fluid into the intake, but it would shortly die, so we started spraying it in every time the engine was about to die. We were thinking this would help the engine to drink up some of the new fuel with the injector cleaner in it. Whether this helped or not, we were still having problems.
While working on it today, I started the engine, and then my friend pushed in that little cone inside the intake hose just slightly. we noticed that this made the car run as long as he held it in, as long as he didn't move it. letting go caused it to die, as did pushing it in too much. it was very picky where you had to hold it in.
So, we're thinking something's wrong with the air flow sensor or something. something that controls the air fuel ratio maybe. Any thoughts? help on this would be much appreciated, as I can't wait for this car to run!
Thanks,
Brad

The air flow meter (AFM) has a switch that turns the fuel pump on/off. If there is something wrong with it, you'll still get fuel during cranking, but the pump will shut off right afterward. You can download the factory service manual (FSM) for free (links in FAQ), and it'll list some resistance tests for the AFM.
