Need advice on 1983 Rx7

I had just recently spoke with my father and hes going to let me use his 1983 rx7 if i can fix it....and frankly in my opinion to drive the rx7 fixing it is a small price to pay...anyhow, the car had not been operated for probably 1 1/2 to 2 years and this past weekend i tried to tackle the task of getting it up and running
at first i put the key in and i got no signs of life...so i jumped it successfully. however, after pulling the choke and cranking the key along with some gas, the car would only rev up and die..i tried this process several times to see if i could get the car running at least to move it to a different location on property, but it wouldnt stay running long enough...after several attempts the car seemed like it was going to run (it stayed alive much longer in the previous attempts as i kept trying) the car gave out..and now it wont start at all..i know its not the battery..but ive been doing alot of research and some possibilities are a bad fuel pump?..i really dont know..and i would do anything to get this car up and running...i would greatly appreciate any advice on this topic-thanks!

welcome to the board.

before you start buying parts and chasing phantoms, i would start simple. check for vacuum leaks and clean the carburetor thoroughly. if that doesn't work, then move on to the more complex things. a tuneup would be next on the list.

I just did something similar

Star by checking all your fluids. Oil change, flush your radiator, check the fuel.

Also take a look at your plug wires and vacuum lines. if some of them look cracked, replace them.

I'm fixing an 83 myself. just found a wicked short and have to run a wire all the way down my car! :-)

Good luck, friend.

Yep, start with the basic tuneup items. If that doesn't resolve the problem, then consider a carb rebuild.

Keep me in mind when you got the car up and running. I have an 1983 that's refurbished, and I may be able to help you (or you me) when you get to point of starting to work on the reconditioning.
