Well as of today I just bought a 83 rx7 gsl. I currently own an 04 rx8 so im familiar with the rotary engine. I saw a post on craigslist for the car and bought it for $400 dollars. I couldn't help myself. The car has been sitting in the woods for about 5 years in wisconsin. However the rust damage is surprisingly minimal. The body and chasis are in good shape. However the engine is in..well im really not sure how the engine is. It is good shape for sitting in the woods for 5 years but it doesn't start at all. Im looking for advice as to where to start to get the engine running or just find out its dead. If it is dead I will probably do a engine swap or look for a replacement. Any advice will be helpful. with regards to the engine, you'll want to 2 things first:

1. get some oil into the combustion chambers and confirm that it turns freely by hand

2. do a compression test

the results of both should give you a sense of your next move.

 

Check craigslist for a replacement 12a , at least in my area there's a few for sale for under 300 some including the tranny

 

always for sale on Craigslist.

 

After you receive your $300 craigslist engine you can then list your old one on craigslist for around $300. Probably end up being an even swap.
