Either one requires engine disassembly to fix. But apex seals can take out other components when they fail. Such as rotor housings, the rotor, and turbine wheels...
Side seals usually wear out, but if they fail they can damage irons. But as A. C. indicated, it's academic which, as both requre complete disassembly of the engine. Assuming housings and irons are usuable, figure a complete gasket and soft seal replacement and probably all hard seals and springs while your in there.
'Pinning' an engine is usually for very high horsepower applications and really unnecessary otherwise.

well this is how it went down i was driving from san jose to yuba city taking breaks at the B bridge and sac . i was in vac and my teep gauge climbed at a fast pace hella fast. once it went over mid which ive never seen before . i turned the engine off glided off the freeway ... from there i towed to yuba but it seems everyone there is unfamilar to rotor or dont care to help same as san jose
there's part of your problem, the car didn't want to go to yuba.
1.5 years too late, no rotary shops anywhere nearby any longer.
and i believe you are thinking of a coolant seal, not a side seal. but usually they do not go out rapidly, check your coolant level and inspect for any external coolant leaks as well as if the fans actually are turning on or not.
