VA modified exhaust system won't pass VA emmissions

My 94 RX7 exhaust system was radically modified by the previous owner. I don't want to mess w/ it, however, I need to pass VA emissions... and was told it would probably need to be returned to stock! and that's just not gonna happen~so, I was told by an exhaust specialist to buy a "down pipe with high flow converter (direct fit" which would probably take care of the issue. ? If so, where can I find this part? ~Chris J.

Here is a local rotary specialist for you:

If you want specific help, post up some pics of the "radically modified" exhaust. You definitely need a cat to pass emissions. I'd recommend a Bonez high flow from rx7.com

As long as you have cats, you'll probably pass. The test is based primarily on actual exhaust measurements - if a car burns clean enough without any cat, it would probably pass. Inspectors have the leeway to reject a car for not having original emissions control equipment, but most figure that if it meets specs, it's ok. The other thing is you can take it in and have it tested but not inspected so that you can find out if it passes. If they say it will pass, then have them inspect it. Finally, many jurisdictions in VA don't require emissions inspection. You could possibly register it in one of those jurisdictions if you have friends that live there.

problem solved... THANKS.

I appreciate the help... the car's emissions were tested in California (where I originally bought it) and was labeled "gross polluter", so I doubt it would pass here in VA w/o a cat. Anyway, I've read about the jurisdictions in VA w/o emissions tests... and happen to have a brother living in one of the zip codes ;~) so... I'll be "moving" there soon!
