Mileage

The first thing that comes to mind is driving habits. One easy way to improve gas mileage is to not drive the car hard. I owned a 1989 GXL and it was very obvious when I'd been disobeying traffic laws because I would find myself at the gas station more often than weeks when I was being a good law abiding driver.

Also, every car is different and the climate where you live could even play a factor. Make sure tire pressure is where is should be. Get your brakes checked (to ensure minimal brake resistance), alignment, air filter, fuel system flush, etc.... All things that can improve gas mileage. You can also remove excess weight (spare tire, dumbells, large subwoofers, dumbells, etc...)

87 octane, nothing higher is needed. Fresh air/oil/fuel filters, oil, coolant, diff/tranny/brake fluids, spark plugs, plug wires. Seafoam in the fuel tank to clean out the carbon, making sure the Auxiliary ports are operating properly. No prolonged warm up periods before driving. As soon as the engine has run for 30 seconds to 1 minute, begin driving. No hard driving til engine is fully warmed up. Make sure brakes/handbrake aren't dragging, clutch isn't slipping, tires correctly inflated and front end is aligned. All emissions working within spec if your keeping the car emissions legal.

These are just the basic items and general maintenance. There are many things that can be done depending on budget, skill level and how far one wishes to go with mods.

Mileage should be around 22-24 on the highway.
