Unhappy Many problems

To start, yes I have searched on this topic. All of the threads I've seen have their pro's in con's, but I am having trouble deciding. So here's my dilema.

I picked up a TII engine from a friend( dont know if it's S4 or S5). It have everything minus the downpipe and a couple hoses. The only known problem to it thus far is blown apex seals. I've read that blowing an apex seal can damage the rotor or the housing. So full rebuild for this would be obvious for that engine.

Now if I do rebuild this engine, I have the TII tranny to go with it, which would require a new driveshaft. So how long would an N/A LSD hold up to some punishment from the TII engine and tranny?

My other questions would be how I should do this swap. I've seen partial conversion kits for the 6 Port N/A and considered buying that isntead of rebuilding the TII engine(since I don't have an estimate on a full cost if other components are damaged).

This must be getting confusing.....I'm confused myself.

Down to nitty gritty then....should i.....

Convert 6 port to Turbo and part out TII engine
Drop in TII engine and tranny with custom driveshaft on NA LSD
Full engine to LSD swap

....?

I would suggest rebuilding the TII engine and using it. I see a lot of guys with 6-port NAs running very low boost pressure because they have inadequate fuel/timing control for anything more. I don't know what your goals are, but you can run a TII engine with the stock turbo at its limit with much less in the way of fuel/fuel control/timing control.

You also need to figure out if the engine you have is S4 or S5; it matters greatly. Sticking to the same series as the chassis makes the job much easier.

As for the rear end, they are stronger than people seem to think. If you beat on it all the time & get enough wheel hop, you can break one (or any rear end really). But I've put 22,000 miles on mine with ~250 wtq. And I know others (like Aaron) have put 3-400 wtq through them successfully. If you can get a good deal on a TII rear end, use it, but an NA LSD is not a bad option.

How can I find out out the difference between S4 and S5?

I'd really like to do the full TII engine, tranny and driveshaft swap, but money is the biggest setback. Got all this stuff in my garage and it makes me sad to stare at lol

With that being said I'm just concerned that I'm gonna have a totally wrecked engine and worst case scenario I can salvage a couple parts off it. I will have to see how it goes.

S4 has a mechanical oil metering pump on the front cover.
The S5 has a Electrical OMP.

There are many threads in the 2nd gen section to explain S4/S5 differences. There are even links in the FAQ.
