KY MAF question

I just bought a 88 rx7 n/a and the guy that had it before me messed up the factory maf and I was wondering if instead of trying to hunt another one down if I could convert it to a different maf that may be better for it.

How is it messed up?

Basically, it would be far easier to stick with the factory unit. It is already calibrated for the car. They are fairly easy to find in the for sale forums.

I'd guess that someone decided it would be a good idea to adjust the spring tension.
