TX Keith from houston tx-alternator

I have an 88 rx7 13b convertible with magnaflow mufflers also has aftermarket stero and amp. I was driving home, when the radio shut off, and the voltage starting dropping until the car shut off. I removed the alternator, and had it checked at an auto part store, and it passed. I put it back on the car, and started it. The voltmeter on the dash read 12 volts, I checked the battery with a multimeter and it was also 12 volts. I then checked the wire at the alternator, and it was 12 volts but jumped up to 14.5 volts. I checked the voltmeter on the dash, and it then read 14.5 volts. When I shut the car off and restarted it, it reads 12 volts again and will run until the battery dies. I have checked the fuses and ground cables and battery clamps. I have charged the battery with a charger, and it holds it's charge fine. I don't know what else it could be, please help.

Make sure that the two wire connector at the back of the alternator is solidly connected and the pins are not corroded. Clean both the alternator and harness connector. If that doesn't fix the problem, the voltage regulator in the alternator is failing and either it or the alternator will need to be replaced.
