Keep or sell

I need help on some repair issue on my 1993 RX7:

Repairs needed to make it running:

From Repair shop:

Engin Has no Power
Codes 73 and 5
PCM Shorted out due to improper resistance from
secondary Injectors, Engine Vaccum Hose, Solenoids,
and engine wiring harness dry cracked and unreuseable.
Needs engine emission wire harness, PCM Vaccum kit,
Solenoid Valves, Front and Rear secondary injectos.

My question to all is this worth the investment or
should I sell the car and how much for?

The car itself is in great shape on the inside and out.

I got a quote for the shop for $4200.00 to fix it.

Is this to much?

I would love to keep the car but the repair is more then I got.

I don't see how they've concluded that you need new injectors, solenoids, etc if your harness is bad. It takes a few hours of labor to get in there and look directly at the injectors and solenoids.

I definitely can see that a damaged emission wiring harness can cause many of those problems and that harness is well known for roasting in the engine bay heat and requiring replacement. The harness is $800 from Malloy mazda, or more if you have the shop buy it at full retail price. It's a few good hours of labor to install/replace that harness.

The PCM could be replaced with a good used one for under $100. Buying a new PCM is nuts. In any case, if it's a rotary specialist shop you might be able to get them to supply a used PCM and save a lot of $$.

All in all I think this quote is kinda high. If it came from a Mazda dealer get it quoted by a rotary specialist shop. I would NOT trust a dealer with work of this scope. They simply don't have the expertise to properly fix FDs and do it without racking up obscene bills. I think there might be one or two rotary shops in Houston and get the car checked out there.

If I did it myself I'd start with a good used PCM and a new emissions harness, which would cost about $850. I'd expect to find a few other things (oil metering lines, injector o-rings, etc) that also need replacing. But my labor is free and most buyers can't skim through that cheaply. So that puts the value of the car down there with most non-running FDs, which I'd estimate to be between $4k and 8k depending strongly on the condition and mileage of the car.

Thatnks for all the info and I will go down that to try to get the parts that you recommend.

I am the 3rd ower of this can and it is in great condition inside and out.

The car has no rust at all and almost looks new it only has 20k mile on the current engine and a total milage of 69K.

I only have about 3k to fix it.

I hope to post up some pic soon.

MA you need a good mechanic

Try to find a mechanic that specializes in rotary engines. Very weird things can happen to them, and paying dealer prices is tough. Ask around, and there will be a wizard in your neighborhood.

Otherwise sell it. This is a car you have to be willing to get down and dirty with.
