CO Just got my 88 GXL!! Some questions

Finally pickup up an 88 GLX. Body is in pretty good shape. My fiance and I bought it as a project car to fix up any how...

When I change to 3rd gear at a high rpm and don't let the rpms drop a little before shifting I get some gear grind. I am thinking that it's a syncro issue?

Breaks are SQUISHY, like it shouldn't be allowed on the road bad. Any how, I assume that replacing the break pads should fix that because they also squeak pretty bad too when coming to a full stop. What would you recommend? I was just going to grab something quick to make the car drivable (It's not my daily driver, I have a 2011 Camaro for that) The owner said that he replaced the master cylinder (But I can't remember if it was clutch or break...) If I replace the breaks and I still have some petal problems what would you recommend? Caliper check, master cylinder?

Clutch grabs gear well and the rpms dip when I let off, but the clutch doesn't feel the same as my 06' Aveo or my current 2011 Camaro. Gear changes are smooth (other than 3rd at high rpms) I want to make sure that there is nothing wrong with it.

The dummy lights/clock come on and off when I hit bumps, I assume bad solder joints (should be an easy fix)

Is there anything I should be on the lookout for when replacing parts? I want to get this car as road worthy as possible and looking into doing an t2 engine/drive train swap when and if I can find one for a reasonable price. The car has 129k miles and the engine sounds good. I read pretty much every piece of FAQ that I could on the car. Aaron Cake's article about how to buy a used 7 etc, so hopefully I didn't miss anything. We have big plans for it as an auto cross car

So if you have any useful input please advise. Thanks!

The gear grinding does sound like a 3rd gear synchro problem.

For the brakes, a soft pedal would more likely be due to old brake fluid (absorbs water) and rotting brake lines. Braided stainless lines will give you better pedal feel.

Is there some problem with the clutch? Grabbing well is what it's supposed to do.

The clocks notoriously have cold solder joints. I don't think I've heard of the warning lights having bad joints, but I wouldn't rule it out.

Thanks rocket, i'll replace the break fluid, lines, and pads while I am at it this week. Can't be too much more and it's worth it for safetys sake. And I'll need to get into the dash and fix those solder joints too. I noticed that volt meter might have a bad connection because over one of the bumps it started working again.

No I don't think the clutch is bad, it just feels a lot softer than I am used to. No weird noises though, which is what my Aveo was doing before I traded it in for my camaro. It needed some work, so at least this is in better shape than that.

I did notice that something was rattling in the shifter, could have been the shifter could have been something else. I'll keep my eye peeled. When I get in there to clean it, it might just be something fell inside and is shaking around.

I also noticed that the car at around 3000/2000rpm makes the car vibrate a bit more than any other rpm. Is there a reason for that?
