CA Just bought an rx7. loss in engine power help please

hey i just bought an 87 rx7 non turbo. my cousin has an 04 rx8 which have the same engines so mine should be faster since mine is smaller and weighs less. When i accelerate it seems it doesnt have the power it should and even my cousin agrees. My car BARELY wants to make it over 100mph. Im guessing its the fuel filter and injectors because my car seems to need a new fuel filter which would be starving the engine of gasoline and im going to clean the injectors as well. Has anyone else had this problem before? Also my car runs out of gas when my meter says i still have an 8th of a tank. Any suggestions?

You mentioned you just bought the car so have you done full tune up? Plugs, wires, oil, etc etc? You'd be amazed of what a fresh tune

As for the others not too sure I don't think i have enough experience so tell you what you should do lol.

Not to be rude, but I find it HIGHLY unlikely that your 87 NA is as fast as an 04 Rx8.

He is probably putting down a minimum of 40hp more than you and more likely 60hp+ over you. The stock 87 NA was 146HP from the factory IIRC and the 2004 RX8 around 210HP. Those are FACTORY numbers and your car is now 25 years old. Unless it has a complete tune-up as mentioned, even in the best circumstances, you probably aren't at more than 120HP.

It should also be noted that the RX8 engine is not the same as the engine in your car.

Hope this helps!

probably a bad plunger in your gas tank sending bad readings to your gauge.

True. We read the stats for both our mazdas and your right. I have changed the fuel filter now and put in fuel line cleaner in my tank so i hope this helps. Havent taken it down to an 8th of a tank yet but well see what that does. As for the full tune up, I havent changed the oil yet but like i said i replaced the fuel filter and I installed some leading spark plugs (waiting for trailing to arrive in mail). I appreciate all the feedback. Any more suggestions as to why I can be lacking power? And I havent checked compression yet but Ill get right on that.
