Just bought '83 RX-7

Hey there. I'm 18 and I just bought my first car, a 1983 RX-7. I have a few questions about it though, so if you could answer that would be great!

1.)It runs well, has 148,000 miles on it. However, it is missing the shutter valve (I am going to replace it as soon as I get the part) and I noticed while driving that it is a little bit "rough" when decelerating in gear. Is this because of the missing valve or some other problem?

2.)It has a small oil leak between the front rotor housing. Would an engine rebuild be required to fix this? If I don't fix it, am I doing any damage to the engine? It's not a big leak, but it is there....

3)The transmission (manual) whines, it's not too loud but it does......is this normal?

4)Occasionally there is a loud screeching sound from the engine, I've deduced it to be related to either the alternator belt or the alternator itself. How do I determine if it's the belt or the alternator that needs to be replaced?

alright big guy

1) doubt it. check the throttle linkage and make nothings catching. Id even spray some carb cleaner in it and see if it doesn't free it up a bit.

2) Unfortunately.... that's called the leak of death. It is a small oil leak from a faulty dowel pin o ring. A dowel pin is kind of a guide for the layers of the motor to line up.

3) Best thing I can tell ya try to get some Lucas oil in that tranny before **** hits the fan. Or it may just not have fluid in it lol

4) Yep alternator pulley. SHQE Manufacturing / RE-Speed / CAR-B-Q sells dual belt pulleys for the alternator to stop that. But you will have to ditch the air pump...which is a good thing. PM FcinWV if you need more help. He grew up on 1st gens, dude knows his ****.
