Question im about to buy a blown motor, help please.

i came across a guy that has a blown 13b. he said he got the car with it blown, it had ran hot and seized. (before he bought it) he has had it for 7 years and never got around to opening it up. should i get it? he wants 50 bucks for it. i figured the e-shaft is worth that alone. could someone tell me what kind of damage im looking at?... would the rotors, irons and housings still be ok?? im wanting to buy it for a project. but i also dont want to have to put 3k into it. i know it will need to be rebuilt. and i plan on doing that myself.

please tell me what im getting myself into! haha

i wouldn't get my hopes up too much. if it locked up, the entire engine could be hosed, but you may get lucky and end up with some housings that are not warped or FUBAR. the moving parts are less likely to be good though. the bottomline is you'd need to pull it apart to know anything for sure. the real question is if the experience with disassembly and familiarizing yourself with parts is worth $50 to you.

yes. you have a few choices for brand new carbies, but they're a pretty penny. if you go used, you have many, many more choices, and usually for half the price new. in general, you're pretty much looking at 4 barrels (like Holley), or 2 barrels (like Weber). i didn't include twin 2 barrel systems because they're pretty rare these days.

Possible sources include (but not limited to):
Racing Beat
Rotary Shack
local rotary meets
the classifieds on this board

Sounds like the e-shaft would be the one usable part in this engine. The thing is, good luck selling an e-shaft for $50. The market is saturated. I helped a shop close a few years ago and we sent 30+ eccentric shafts away with the scrap metal truck. Since eccentric shafts never fail, they aren't really in great demand.

Depending on the circumstances of the seizure and failure, there may be varying degrees of damage. But since you mention it was run hot, then it is safe to say all the internal parts are bad. Chrome may have delaminated from the housings, irons may be warped and scarred, rotors are most certainly bad from spun bearings, e-shaft may be damaged from the same, etc. etc. And if the whole thing sat after overheating, with coolant in the chambers, it is all a rusty mess.

I'd tell the seller "I'll haul it away for free to get it out of your yard".

There probably isn't much hope.

And why would you want to install a carburetor? Why downgrade the engine?
