Hole in the rear iron?

Hey guys,
I was cleaning up a TII rear iron and found a hole on the backside of it (pics attached). It is right by the oil pedestal. Is the iron scrap?

welcome to the board.

it would appear that that may simply be the hole that accepts one of the two inspection plate bolts. it looks like the bolt is in it. remove the bolt and see if the hole goes all the way through.

even if it doesn't, it doesn't look like something that would leak compression, oil or antifreeze. just investigate it further.

first of all, i can't say whether or not the housing is scrap or not because i would need to see the whole thing. however, in the context of your question, it doesn't look like something you should worry about.

Thanks Diabolical1 for the welcome and response.
The hole does go through to the bolt thread but has not broke the thread yet.
Would it be worth while to patch it with some JBWeld?

Thanks good to know. It doesn't look like Mazda would have machined it like that. It looks just like a random crack.

you'll find lots of pilot holes like that on these engines.
