hi. newbie here, oily turbo problem!! help :-D

Hi to all my names jason. this is my first post but iv been reading the forum for months. I purchased a rx7 r1 about 3 months ago. My first rotary powered car and i love it. Its a 93 model and fairly standard apart from apexi bov, twin apexi inlet, apexi exhaust system and boost gauge, My car was imported to uk in 2007 and has done around 1500 miles since then so iv spent all my time doing maintenence to bring it up to scratch and hopefully make it reliable. Anyway after its first really hard run the other day it started smoking a little under bonnet. Faint smell of burning oil, So i jacked it up today and had a look and its pretty oily underneath, although it was before this run. The outside face of rear turbo is kinda oily on inlet side as is the metal oil pipe under turbo. Im trying to narrow it down, it doesnt seem to be using much oil, and only smokes a little until its warm then nothing. I hope iv given enough info, Any ideas or input as to the cause would be greatly appreciated.

Oddly enough, one thing I've never had to mess with a lot (so far), other than R & R'ing them for a rebuild, are the turbos. So maybe this is more of a free bump until one of the really smart people here can answer. But personally this is what I would do...

Get the car up in the air and when everything is cold, clean the entire area as best as you can. Degreaser if you have to. Then check it again after a day or two of driving.
I do know that it's not unusual to find some oil over time in the intake track. Which could then leak out at the bottom of that secondary turbo housing. But to me, it looks like it might be coming from higher up on the turbos....
Here's a diagram of the oil system that might help give you an idea of where to focus on....

Hey thanks for the reply taking what you said on board, i got under the car again and had a peek. The top of turbo is dry so dont think its likely above it. But its quite wet around the oil return line from the turbo, which you can see in my pic. So possibly its leaking from there. Its kind of a j shaped pipe which i believe is c in the very helpful pic you posted. It seems like there would be two poss 3 gaskets. For this pipe. If anyone can point me in the right direction with either a part num or replacment pipe i can source in uk. Thanks again for your help.

Or even just possibly cleaning up the old gaskets and pipe and retorquing them up.

could be blown seal in the turbo? always good to clean it check the gasket/repalce the gasket for oil inlet on turbo and then run and keep an eye on it. Last turbo car i had was a passat but the turbo was blown and it was burning oil in that like crazy.

IIRC, the twins will smoke off-boost when the internal seals are dying.

I bought my car over a decade ago, with 50k. First time I looked underneath before buying there was a small drop of oil hanging on the bottom of the rear housing...apparently never dripped enough to even get things dirty. Eleven years and ~70k more miles, there's still a drip of oil hanging off that housing... [knocking on wood] turbos still going strong.

Thanks for your replys. Im hoping iv found the problem. Turns out the oil return pipe off the rear turbo had no gaskets at all. I fitted the two gaskets and my oil pressure is now higher than its ever been. So fingers crossed.
