Heat coming from shift boot after tranny swap

Hey guys, I just swapped my transmission on my 87 fc n/a and I was riding around today and noticed a pretty good amount of heat when I touched the shift boot and I don't remember ever feeling heat come from the tranny before. I was just wondering if this was normal or if I did something wrong during the swap.

The thick rubber boot that normally seals around the shifter is prone to tear with age/heat. You can obtain a replacement from Mazdatrix for about $60.
