has anyone replaced there 1980 rear end with a 1981 gs rear?

I am looking at swapping my rear ends to be able to get brake parts which seem to be non existent for the 1980 GS model 1981 and up rear brake parts are stocked almost anywhere online.

I have an 81 rear end coming, I just wanted to see what I am getting into with the swap. I know they are interchangeable, but will anything be different?

welcome to the board.

it should all be pretty straightforward. your only possible issue might be the line that attaches to the rear end itself.

check this thread out and look at post #18 (Siraniko).

If I recall correctly, the thread pitch of the brake lines are different between the different series. If that is the case, you may need to install new lines, new flare ends, or thread adapters.
