Gunk in my intake manifold?

Gunk in my intake manifold?
87 S4 T2
Just took off my UIM and noticed this thick black gunk in only the 2 outter runners in both LIM and UIM. This stuff is caked in there barely reacts to engine degreaser, air intake cleaner and brake cleaner. Is this normal? Where is it coming from? Is it a sign of some unknown problem with my engine? I'm super curious? Any input is appreciated.
