Grounding: fundamental electric theory

I've always wondered why it is necessary to ground. I know it is used to set a reference for the voltage, but why is this necessary? How does the effectiveness of grounding affect the performance of your car? Does the grounds have to be at a particular place on the vehicle?

Thanks.
