Flames.... how do you do it and what is the best technique?

i've heard, you can blow flames from the exhaust, w/ no flamethrowing kit, how is this done? what do i need, what do i need to remove... and what makes it do this?

Barnett87GXL 10-17-09 07:43 PM

Remove the cats and run free flowing exaust

n.taluckder 10-17-09 08:30 PM

this should help http://www.ehow.com/how_5108243_buil...s-exhaust.html btw my dad used to do this to his car when he was 16

JxT 10-17-09 08:41 PM

Neat, except he was asking about it without using flame kits.

Grip 10-17-09 09:32 PM

turbo back catless exhaust

an atmospheric dump bov might cause a temporarily rich situation between shifts, dont know for sure.

need RX7 10-17-09 09:40 PM

With my n/a with no cats, air pump, or ACV, I can get pretty big ones by revving to 5-6000 RPM then slamming the throttle closed then kicking it open again for a second.

that one guy300 10-18-09 03:05 AM

so just strait pipe it?

farberio 10-18-09 09:37 AM

^yup. But it will be very very very loud with just a straight pipe

StavFC 10-18-09 01:11 PM

i find driving it like i stole it helps me...

Don't straight pipe it, it's loud and annoying. Just eliminating the cats is enough.

flamethrower13b 10-19-09 03:04 AM

I have figured out how to do it on a turbo 13b.

I discovered this driving a dunebuggy at night by accident. So I was having a ball driving through the desert in Glamis. My passengers in the back seat noticed the back of the car lighting up bright after I gave the car full throttle and buzzed up to anything above 6000rpm and would let off the throttle. It was shooting 4 to 7 foot flames as soon as I let off the gas. It looked pretty damn cool to me and my friends. The BLM Ranger at oldsmobile hill didn't really think so and pulled me over and gave me a ration of crap. Why? How? Well simple answer was I had a blown turbo gasket from in between the turbo and the exhaust coming from the engine. See since the the injectors are flowing so much fuel at WOT and when you slap the throttle shut. There is a delay in response and there is a bit of left over fuel your engine simply cant burn with out the AIR and simply goes out the exhaust. Combine that with a glowing red hot turbo hot side and all you need is the OXYGEN for it to ignite all on its own. Cool part is it simply burns its self out when the excess fuel is gone. Like 3 to 5 seconds in my case. So if you have a turbo motor with a decent amount of fuel in the fuel map. Then either a blown turbo gasket like in my case as the air gets sucked in on its own. Or better weld a small valve or cutout flapper deal you can operate by a switch if want. Or go the cheap route with a cable one going into your driver area. Then if you want flames its as simple as when ever you step on it hard and then as you let off cracking that valve open a tad for flames. If you leave it shut, no air = no flames.

Word of warning though. Make sure you you don't crack it open too much cause you will not only get flames but also a big POP! or backfire! Learned this as after a few good backfires I stopped got out of the buggy to learn that the turbo and muffler were about to fall off due to very loose bolts and really a bad mounting setup. Man the car had no power too without any boost from the turbo.

Also you should check if all your fuel connections are tight and there is no leaks. And be sure where your exhaust exit is safe! Like away from your car or fuel tank preferably!

Aaron Cake 10-19-09 09:27 AM

Flames are a byproduct of a poorly tuned car. A properly tuned car will hardly ever throw flames at anything but wide open throttle and full boost.

MTRfc 10-22-09 11:05 PM

well said aaron. backfiring (though maybe cool looking) is the product of mis-tuning or poor tuning.

umm....... perfectly tuned N/A cars spit flames too.

w.sen 10-25-09 10:43 PM

Take out the dash pot on the back of the throttle body and hold open the primary throttle butterfly with a small bolt.. Youl pop flame and have the car run like shit!
I did that when I did the tb mod.. It backfired on every shift.. Part thottle when I let off the gas..

Or just tune your tps way out.. That will do it

Enjoy

that one guy300 10-26-09 12:18 AM

i like the idea of flames, but im not too sure about making it drive even worse.... my car isn't in the best of shape, it has only driven like 20 miles in the past 7 years.... i have just fixed the alternator, clutch master and slave, antifreeze, i regrounded everything, windshield wipers, shifter bushing, several plastic trim peices, it still needs a new exhaust (which is in more than one peice and many holes) and the rear struts, which if i take off too fast, will let the car jump off the ground, it needs a windshield and a blinker bulb.... hell of a list, and i believe it will break even more than that, but once im done fixing everything, i bet the engine will blow ha ha ha also im having problems with it running hot.... ill prolly end up putting in a thermostat, and radiator, and flushing the entire system..... i was just interested on what would happen in a stock car with strait pipe... and maybe an intake.... matter of fact ill go check to see if i can find something with some flames

fc3si 10-26-09 12:21 AM

sounds like a fun list.

mine need a windshield too :/

i just punched out my cat, i'll let ya know how it sounds after i test it out.

w.sen 10-26-09 02:17 AM

My 7 was having problems after I removed the 5th and 6th ports I also removed the bac valve... when I did the car had hard time idleing.. So I used to small bolts to crack open the thottle plates... I did it on the primary .. It was horrible... idled at 2 grand.. Back fire on every shift.. Part throttle backfireing... got really annoying after the first 5 minutes of driving.. Push in the clutch back fire...

I ended up useing it only on the secondarys since its not tps related.. And gave the tps a tune no more back fireing only under WOT and some times not even then...

Take out exhaust. You'll love it more.

that one guy300 10-26-09 07:23 PM

question.... what if i take just 2 of the 3 cats out? my exhaust man wont take out all 3, he wants to leave the pre cat on, and take the 2 rear ones out......... would the car still do it?... it being a pos already..... and earlier, i forgot to add, fuel pump and fuel filter... which was the first thing, then they both failed, so i had the tank cleaned, put another pump and filter on, and refilled with good gas, ha ha now it actually runs fairly well i guess ( first time driving one), and the tach doesn't work either... so i can't tell where to shift at... never heard a buzzer yet, except when a heater hose blew and the coolant buzzer went off.... soo, yeah how bout them cats?btw my car is already missing the mufflers, but still has all 3 cats, with straitpipes where the mufflers should be... not to mention the coat hangers holdin up the exhaust.... im fixin that on WED, anything i should know about the exhaust before i let the guy hack away at it?, this is his first rx 7 also, he knows less than me about them! and i dont know much

GET A NEW MECHANIC!!!

I hardly let anyone touch my car besides me and when I have to I choose someone with ROTARY EXPERIENCE!!

Leaving only one precat is completely useless. The precats only do anything when the engine is cold, so once the car is warmed up, doesn't do much at all.

Moral of the story: find someone else to do your work.

what do you mean by useless? useless for takin fumes out? or useless it wont help make any flames? here its illegal to take them all out... so hes just gonna take out 2, wouldn't that free the exhaust up enough to pop a lil flame? either way, even if he dont take them out he still has to fix the exhaust... here there is no one who knows about rotarys, just one shop that charges $110 an hour, im poor and this is a pos, im not spending 110 an hour.... i've seen 3 rx-7s that actually run, and only 1 ran good, which he took it to the 110 shop, and paid like over $5000 for some regular shit i could have done.... i am a auto tech, but i never got to work on a 7, so i bought one to fix up and this is it..... i dont do exhaust work, or tire work either, so im just poppin questions out, i know nothin about exhaust, except cats get plugged up, and i send the car down the street to the exhaust shop, this guy is great at exhaust work... hes just never done an rx 7... soo tips would be great

w.sen 10-27-09 10:52 PM

I can't wait for you to get pulled over and your car gets impounded, I don't know how it is in Kansas, but that's how it can be in Cail. :icon_tdow

My car is loud as fuck and sets off alarms unintentionally. If you're looking to have this car on the street refrain from redic noise and the flamage.

Either pull all the cats and do a full exhaust upgrade, or none at all. There is no middle ground that would be advantageous.

If you are short on money, buy a stainless steel packed resonator at the local speed shop (won't be more then $100), a set of generic mufflers (avoid fart cannons, they are obnoxious and won't last) for another $100, and have a local exhaust shop fab up the system for probably another $100.

Don't pull your BAC, misadjust your TPS, remove your aux ports, run a straight pipe or follow any of the other stupid advice given in this thread.

hahaha nice
you could always just route fuel directly to your exhaust

Sorry to be unclear. Leaving in one precat won't do you any good from an emissions standpoint. Didn't know it was just exhaust work you were having done. I'm a big fan of doing all your own work when possible, but I too cannot do my own exhaust or tire work.

Soooo... yeah, I would listen to aaroncake. He tends to know what he's talking about :)

Premiumriceonly 10-28-09 01:51 PM

Agreed

sinfulrx7 10-28-09 03:42 PM

haha what a thread..

that one guy300 10-29-09 08:05 PM

well i got the exhaust done today.... i love it.... the guy ended up junkin all the cats, they were all plugged up... in the process he didn't put any back on, so now its basically a straitpipe, with the original "dual" exhaust, w/o mufflers or cats... i tell ya its a hell of alot faster than it was. it still needs alot though. but another day is better for searchin that... btw its not as loud as i expected, i might put up a video/exhaust note if i get the time to do it.

w.sen 10-29-09 10:17 PM

Like no mufflers? Just pipe?? And how much the exhaust did you get done? Like header to rear? Or did u leave the exhaust mani?

that one guy300 10-31-09 08:51 AM

Originally Posted by w.sen (Post 9594317)

just a pipe from the original exhaust manifold all the way to the back, basically all he did was take out the cats, there was no muffler on it in the beginning. it does have the y pipe in there still with "dual" exhaust. the cat section is now just one single pipe, which hooks to the y pipe then that runs out the back of the car.

BigBoss 10-31-09 09:58 AM

i want this on my 12a. i have full catless racing beat exhaust and i don't throw flames, why?

my car wont do it either... no idea why not....

w.sen 11-02-09 12:50 AM

My friend has a 2.5 inch exhaust from a custom 2.5 inch header to a huge ass tip he pops lil flames.. Nothing like flamethower shit..

I got a pipe from the exhuast mani to the Y to the " duals". Its like super kinked right after the mani it sucks I can't wait to put a full exhaust on my 88 na..

that one guy300 11-02-09 05:20 PM

well if i drive slow .... its not too loud inside, outside, its loud, i tried once to see if i would get pulled over, and let it rip getting onto the highway.... and cop just looked at me, and gave me a thumbs up and he was keeping up for a lil bit till i hit about 70 on the ramp(speed limit), lol... so its good enough for me, kansas has federal laws... not cali... but it is an illegal exhaust, they wont impound it... you just gotta pick it up or have it towed away..... and fix it then have it inspected for whatever the problem was,.. and like i said its not as loud as you may think... compared to others i have seen around, mine is like 200th place.... cops really dont care unless you are being an asshole about it and revving everywhere you go, or doing something else way illegal.... you do run into those mean cops though

w.sen 11-02-09 06:31 PM

" I tried once to get pulled over, and let it rip getting onto the hiway... the cop just looked at me and gave me a thumbs up"

Dude!!! That's awesome!!! Hahha

i did notice, this car does make the alarms do a caution beep, never set them off all the way... and only happened twice, and i was right next to the car, like pulling out of a parking spot

FCFRANK 11-03-09 09:27 PM

^^lol yea my old neighbors had to lower the sensetivity on their car cuz every time i would pull in their alarm would go off...

hagakure8398 11-04-09 06:39 AM

I have a 91 T11 with no cats or muffler. It sets off alarms all the time. Worst part is I live on an Army base so I have to keep the silencer on it till i leave post.

w.sen 11-04-09 12:39 PM

I was at a local met I parked in the middle to take up the honda spots... I was waiting far a fellow 7 owner he neva showed.. So when I left I revved out 1st... come to a stop and I can like 4 honda alams goin off... I thought yep my job is done!

FCFRANK 11-04-09 03:41 PM
