Fd3s exhaust manifold

I'm about to install bnr twins, but my exhaust manifold and turbo heat shield was shot, completely rusted out. The bnr's are ceramic coated. Should I get new shielding for the manifold, send it to get ceramic coated, or would running without shields be much of an issue?

You asked, so I think you already know the answer. Get replacement shielding or have them ceramic coated. Even with the shielding/coating they're a huge source of underhood heat. Without either you'll literally be broiling hoses, plastics, solenoids, check-valves etc.

I appreciate the insight, there isn't a lot of activity on the newb forums as it is. What I was looking for was more of an I've done *this and experienced *that kind of response.

I doubt many have installed the manifold without shielding so you may not get a lot of alternatives that have been tested. If yours aren't usable you might try posting a WTB ad in the 3rd gen parts for sale section.
FWIW my OEM shielding was pretty crusty in spots but I wire-wheeled it in bad areas and used a sanding pad on the rest before spraying it with the DEI ceramic sealer/paint. That was about eight years ago and those shields still look just like they do here.

Just happened to look at the picture again of your manifold in place and noticed what look to be nyloc nuts holding the lower intake manifold. If so, I don't think that's factory. And I gotta think they wouldn't last very long in that high heat environment. And getting to them afterward would be a huge PITA. Just saying.

Also, you may have already done it since the picture was taken, but I recommend chasing the studs and holes in the manifold with a tap and using plenty of hi-temp copper anti-seize so you get an accurate torque and seal. The gaskets are expensive and exhaust leaks suck.

They are, and I was unsure about that myself given the area. It's a stainless bolt kit from himni racing and I don't know the specs on the nylon. There are high temp nylon lockers but I rather doubt these are that grade. I had the Lim ceramic coated and didn't want to put the rusty hardware back on there. I haven't touched the hot side yet, still building up the intake. I think I may go ahead and send the manifold off and find some heat shields. Better more than not enough. I find I'm having to chase threads on just about everything, 24 year old cars are no joke
